Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills
The No Surprises Act, effective January 1, 2022, was created to protect patients from unexpected medical bills, particularly when receiving care from out-of-network providers. DeMaio Family Chiropractic & Physical Therapy is committed to transparency and helping every patient understand their rights and expected costs before treatment begins.
When care is provided by a healthcare provider outside your insurance network, the billed amount may exceed what your plan covers. This practice—known as balance billing—can lead to unexpected expenses. The No Surprises Act restricts balance billing in specific situations to protect patients from unexpected financial responsibility.
You are protected if you:
- Receive emergency services, even if the provider or facility is out of network.
- Receive non-emergency services from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility without consenting to out-of-network charges.
Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured or Self-Pay Patients
If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance for your treatment, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate that outlines the expected costs of your care. This estimate allows you to plan financially and understand your anticipated expenses prior to treatment.
- You may request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling an appointment.
- Whenever possible, you will receive the estimate in writing at least one business day before your visit.
- A Good Faith Estimate is not a bill; actual costs may differ depending on your treatment needs.
If the final bill is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the charges.
