More About Dr. DeMaio
I originally planned to pursue a career in medicine, but the more I learned about chiropractic, the more passionate I became about this field of healthcare, says Dr. DeMaio.
“There’s no greater reward than helping patients return to good health—without the need for surgery or drugs.”
A Bowie, Maryland Native
Dr. John DeMaio was born and raised in Bowie, Maryland. He completed his undergraduate pre-medical studies at Prince George’s Community College and the University of Maryland before being accepted to New York Chiropractic College, where he graduated with academic honors. During his training, he was selected to serve as Director’s Assistant at
the Levittown Outpatient Facility, completing a two-year clinical internship that shaped his patient-centered approach to care.
After earning his Doctorate of Chiropractic, Dr. DeMaio returned home to Maryland and opened his first practice in Annapolis in 1990. Five years later, he established a family-focused chiropractic office in Crofton, which has since expanded to serve the Bowie and Gambrills communities.
Often regarded by his patients as their “family doctor,” Dr. DeMaio combines traditional medical insight with holistic and nutritional strategies to support whole-body wellness. His care philosophy is simple: treat the cause—not just the symptom—and allow the body to heal itself whenever possible.
Dr. DeMaio is Board Certified in AMA Guides to Spinal Impairment and Disability Ratings, a qualification that enhances his ability to evaluate and manage work-related injuries and disability cases. His additional certifications as a Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist (CMNCS) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) further expand his scope, enabling him to integrate nutrition, lifestyle, and spinal health into a unified plan of care.
More Than A Chiropractor
Dr. DeMaio currently serves as an executive board member of the Maryland Chiropractic Association and has held the position of chiropractic sports physician for the Bowie State University Athletic Department. His dedication to advancing chiropractic care extends beyond his practice—he frequently lectures across Maryland on topics such as chiropractic physiology, rehabilitation, and clinical nutrition, educating both the public and other healthcare professionals. He also serves on the Maryland Department of Health (DHMH) State Board of Chiropractic Rehabilitation Committee and is a candidate for board certification as a Diplomate in Clinical Nutrition. In addition, Dr. DeMaio is an appointed panel member of the Maryland Neurologic Institute, affiliated with Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Outside Of The Office
Outside of his clinical work, Dr. DeMaio is a devoted family man who finds his greatest joy in spending time with his wife and six children. Together, they enjoy summers at the beach, family camping trips, and a variety of outdoor activities that keep everyone active and connected.
An avid swimmer and mountain biker, Dr. DeMaio also enjoys rollerblading and taking his motorcycle out for a relaxed ride. While he leads a busy life, his passion for patient care remains at the heart of everything he does. Dr. DeMaio often says that practicing chiropractic is not just his profession—it’s his calling—and he intends to continue serving patients for as long as he is able.
