More About Dr. DeMaio

I originally planned to pursue a career in medicine, but the more I learned about chiropractic, the more passionate I became about this field of healthcare, says Dr. DeMaio.

“There’s no greater reward than helping patients return to good health—without the need for surgery or drugs.”

A Bowie, Maryland Native

Dr. John DeMaio was born and raised in Bowie, Maryland. He completed his undergraduate pre-medical studies at Prince George’s Community College and the University of Maryland before being accepted to New York Chiropractic College, where he graduated with academic honors. During his training, he was selected to serve as Director’s Assistant at

the Levittown Outpatient Facility, completing a two-year clinical internship that shaped his patient-centered approach to care.

After earning his Doctorate of Chiropractic, Dr. DeMaio returned home to Maryland and opened his first practice in Annapolis in 1990. Five years later, he established a family-focused chiropractic office in Crofton, which has since expanded to serve the Bowie and Gambrills communities.

Often regarded by his patients as their “family doctor,” Dr. DeMaio combines traditional medical insight with holistic and nutritional strategies to support whole-body wellness. His care philosophy is simple: treat the cause—not just the symptom—and allow the body to heal itself whenever possible.

Dr. DeMaio is Board Certified in AMA Guides to Spinal Impairment and Disability Ratings, a qualification that enhances his ability to evaluate and manage work-related injuries and disability cases. His additional certifications as a Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist (CMNCS) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) further expand his scope, enabling him to integrate nutrition, lifestyle, and spinal health into a unified plan of care.

More Than A Chiropractor

Dr. DeMaio currently serves as an executive board member of the Maryland Chiropractic Association and has held the position of chiropractic sports physician for the Bowie State University Athletic Department. His dedication to advancing chiropractic care extends beyond his practice—he frequently lectures across Maryland on topics such as chiropractic physiology, rehabilitation, and clinical nutrition, educating both the public and other healthcare professionals. He also serves on the Maryland Department of Health (DHMH) State Board of Chiropractic Rehabilitation Committee and is a candidate for board certification as a Diplomate in Clinical Nutrition. In addition, Dr. DeMaio is an appointed panel member of the Maryland Neurologic Institute, affiliated with Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Outside Of The Office

Outside of his clinical work, Dr. DeMaio is a devoted family man who finds his greatest joy in spending time with his wife and six children. Together, they enjoy summers at the beach, family camping trips, and a variety of outdoor activities that keep everyone active and connected.

An avid swimmer and mountain biker, Dr. DeMaio also enjoys rollerblading and taking his motorcycle out for a relaxed ride. While he leads a busy life, his passion for patient care remains at the heart of everything he does. Dr. DeMaio often says that practicing chiropractic is not just his profession—it’s his calling—and he intends to continue serving patients for as long as he is able.

EARNING THE TRUST AND RESPECT - ONE PATIENT AT A TIME

What Patients Are Saying About Dr. DeMaio

After a car accident left me with severe neck stiffness and daily headaches, I was referred to Dr. John, and it was one of the best recommendations I’ve ever received. From the first appointment, he treated me like a person, not a case number. He explained what the X-rays showed, what my treatment would involve, and what to expect in terms of progress. His combination of chiropractic adjustments and decompression therapy worked wonders for me. Within a few weeks, the headaches began to fade, and my range of motion improved. The office staff is always welcoming, and I appreciate the reminders that help keep me on track.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. DeMaio for several years, and I can honestly say he’s changed my quality of life. When I first came in, I could barely sit through a workday without sharp lower back pain. Dr. DeMaio took the time to listen, ask the right questions, and explain exactly what was happening in a way that made sense. His adjustments are precise and gentle, and I never feel rushed or like “just another patient.” He genuinely cares about long-term wellness, not just temporary relief. What stands out most is that he remembers your story — how your pain started, how you’re progressing, and what your goals are. Thanks to his consistent care and guidance, I’m back to exercising, sleeping comfortably, and living pain-free.
Raylene S.
I’ve been seeing Dr. DeMaio for several years now, and he’s the only chiropractor who’s been able to truly keep my back pain under control. He listens carefully, explains what he’s doing, and never rushes the appointment. The whole staff is friendly and organized, and I always leave feeling better than when I came in.
Alton K.
Five stars all the way! Can’t praise them enought, honestly! Everything's very bright and sunny. The entire staff is very friendly and I love the big HELLO, RITA! I get every time I walk in!
Rita J.
I first met Dr. DeMaio when my teenage son injured his lower back during sports season. We’d seen a few specialists, but no one could pinpoint the cause of his pain. Dr. DeMaio performed a thorough evaluation, explained the mechanics of what was going on, and laid out a straightforward plan. Within a few sessions, my son’s pain had eased, and he was back on the field with better posture and movement than before. That experience made me a believer, and now our whole family goes to him for care. His approach blends chiropractic skill, nutrition awareness, and overall wellness — it’s clear he’s deeply invested in his patients’ health. I always recommend Dr. DeMaio to anyone looking for real, lasting results.
Wendy A.
The office has a welcoming atmosphere, and every staff member treats you like family. I wouldn’t trust my care to anyone else. I’ve been to several chiropractors over the years, but none compare to Dr. DeMaio. He’s not only highly skilled but also incredibly attentive to detail. He takes the time to educate you on what’s happening with your spine and how each adjustment helps. I came in with chronic mid-back pain that made even simple tasks uncomfortable. Within a few visits, I noticed measurable improvement — less tension, better posture, and more energy. But what really impressed me was his integrated approach; he looks at nutrition, daily habits, and overall lifestyle, not just spinal alignment
